US-style innovation is tops

The world’s 50 Most Innovative Companies ranking remains pretty US-centric – according to BCG, the latest list comprises 29 firms from the US, 11 from Europe, and 10 from Asia (three of which are Chinese). And the top four – Apple, Googe, Tesla. Microsoft – hail from the US, with Samsung in fifth spot and BMW the first European in seventh. In fact German companies fare pretty well, with BMW, Daimler and Bayer along the world’s 11 leading innovators. VW is back in 35, but may well backslide in the wake of the emissions scandal.

What gets all these firms into the Top 50? According to BCG it’s all about four critical attributes. We are talking about an emphasis on speed, well-run (and often lean) R&D processes, the use of technological platforms, and the systematic exploration of adjacent markets.

But, then, Microsoft in fourth? Could it be the way MS quickly swallowed Nokia, then made a mess of mobile and rapidly wrote off the whole show? And Yahoo in 16th? Is this the same outfit currently considering selling off its core Internet business as it fails to capitalise on the growth in mobile, video, native and social media advertising? The market doesn’t think that much of Yahoo. Its shares have slipped 33% this year to date.
